For the 9th year, the IGSP is pleased to host its annual Summer Fellowship Program for undergraduates!

Engage in research through the 10-week summer fellowship program within the interdisciplinary Duke Institute for Genome Sciences & Policy (IGSP). Gain an appreciation of major questions in genome sciences and policy currently under investigation within the IGSP through faculty-mentored research projects as well as weekly lectures with faculty, student research discussions, planned social activities, and end-of-summer research presentations. Join the almost 100 students who have spent their summers with us, many of whom have continued participating in research at Duke or at their home institutions and have gone on to pursue further education and training in science and research.

Program Overview and Eligibility

Research in the Institute for Genome Sciences & Policy (IGSP) ranges from cutting-edge genome science, technology and their applications, to the study of the ethical, legal, social and personal consequences of genome science and technology for virtually every facet of human activity. The IGSP Summer Fellowship Program is open to students from 4-year US colleges and universities who have successfully completed (or are currently enrolled in) at least one biological sciences course. The IGSP program is designed for current freshmen and sophomores -- even those with no prior research experience -- to work with them as they develop a passion for research, engage in ongoing research projects and gain an appreciation for the value of open-ended, student-initiated research.

We especially encourage women and individuals from minority groups to apply. Students will be selected for the program based on their academic record, application responses and letters of recommendation. Applicants should indicate whether they are interested in a laboratory science or policy fellowship on the application.

The 2013 Summer Fellowship Program online application is available below. Since the application must be completed in one sitting, students are strongly encouraged to download the PDF of the application in advance in order to prepare the short essay responses, which can then be pasted into the online version. On the application, students will be asked to indicate if they have particular interest in or preference for a specific program/area of research. The IGSP Summer Fellowship Program requires full-time participation, and students selected for the program will not be able to take summer session courses or engage in other employment during the 10-week program

Stipend and Housing

Housing will be provided to students accepted into the program in Duke University residence facilities, most likely on Central Campus, for the duration of the program. In addition to housing, students will receive a stipend of $4,750.
